Making the Web More Accessible Using Machine Learning
April 3, 2019 | Source: My Planet
Machine learning now drives a huge number of day-to-day interactions on the web. When we use Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, or any of the big social media sites, we’re encountering machine learning (ML) algorithms that help provide a richer and more personalized user experience. Though we don’t consciously think about the ML powering our programs very often, it’s always there. But if thinking about an algorithm-powered tool directing some portion of our everyday experiences is rare, it’s even more rare that we think about how these tools affect users with disabilities…
New symbol on handicapped-accessible parking signs doesn’t help caregivers
April 4, 2019 | Source: The Tennessean
Tennessee seeks to mirror New York and Connecticut in adopting a new symbol for handicapped-accessible parking spots. Rather than the globally recognized symbol of a stick figure sitting straight in the wheelchair, the new image shows a stick figure in a wheelchair leaning in forward motion. While a nice sentiment, it’s hard to imagine this issue weighing heavily on the hearts and bodies of millions living with disabilities — or those caring for them…
Can audiobooks be the great equalizer for students with learning differences?
April 4, 2019 Source eSchool News
Low reading ability is a major contributor to learning inequality in our schools. An estimated 26 million students have learning differences, including tens of thousands of students with dyslexia, a neurological condition that affects reading and related language-based processing skills. Unless educators can find new approaches to deliver reading instruction and personalize learning environments for these frustrated learners, many will fail. Students with learning differences are more likely to struggle academically, socially and emotionally…
ADA lawsuit filed against Longboat Key over website
April 4, 2019 | Source: Your Observer
A lawsuit filed in federal court against Longboat Key by a blind Daytona Beach man claims the town’s website is “deliberately indifferent” to provisions of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act and seeks fixes and damages. The lawsuit, filed March 8 in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, specifies the town must “update all electronic documents made available to the public to remove barriers in order that individuals with visual disabilities can access the electronic documents to the full extent” of federal law…

DC Restaurants Could Do More to Welcome Diners With Disabilities
April 4, 2019 | Source: Washington City Paper
True or false: If a customer who uses a wheelchair cannot access the tables in the bar area of a restaurant because the only choices are bar stools and high-tops, the restaurant should offer the customer a table in the dining room and the same happy hour prices available at the bar. True. “Restaurants are required to modify their policies and procedures as needed to serve patrons with disabilities as equal to those without disabilities,” according to DC Office of Disability Rights Director Mathew McCollough…
Will artificial intelligence make the college classroom more accessible?
April 4, 2019 | Source: Education Dive
Artificial intelligence (AI) has seeped into almost every corner of higher education, popping up in the classroom, administrative offices, and even in dorm rooms and on campus grounds — all with the promise to streamline tasks and create a more personalized college experience for students. As the technology steers colleges away from a one-size-fits-all approach, it is helping them make progress on one of their most long-running goals: making higher ed more accessible to all types of learners…
Center for Faith and Life reevaluates accessibility
April 4, 2019 | Source: Luther College Chips
According to recent changes in the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, Luther’s Center for Faith and Life is not up to code. The CFL was built in 1977, 13 years before the ADA was put in place in 1990. The most recent updates to the ADA in 2016 made codes stricter. The current layout of the CFL has two side entrance ramps, a main auditorium that provides some seating for those with limited mobility, and accessibility stalls in the bathrooms. According to the new ADA regulations, the ramps are too steep and the accessibility stalls are not wide enough…
Accessibility for Vestibular Disorders: How My Temporary Disability Changed My Perspective
April 4, 2019 | Source: A List Apart
Accessibility can be tricky. There are plenty of conditions to take into consideration, and many technical limitations and weird exceptions that make it quite hard to master for most designers and developers. I never considered myself an accessibility expert, but I took great pride in making my projects Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliant…ish. They would pass most automated tests, show perfectly in the accessibility tree, and work quite well with keyboard navigation. I would even try (and fail) to use a screen reader every now and then…
Texas School for the Blind loses $1.5M in funding after accounting error
April 4, 2019 | Source: KXAN
Every year, the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired serves hundreds of some of the most vulnerable special education students across the state on its 40-acre campus in Austin. But, fewer students may benefit from the instruction there after an “accounting error” and financial oversight at the school last year resulted in a $1.5 million budget mistake. The school has done all it can to make necessary cuts, and it comes as the superintendent of 12 years is set to retire and be replaced…
Why are LA and HUD bickering over how to build affordable housing for the disabled?
April 6, 2019 | Source: Los Angeles Times
For years, housing advocates complained to Los Angeles city officials that disabled renters were effectively being shut out of many affordable housing developments. That’s not just unfair, it’s against the law: Low-income housing projects built with federal dollars are required to include a certain number of accessible apartments that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It’s the city’s job to supervise developers to make sure they follow the rules. But too often, advocates said, disabled tenants found that there were no apartments that met their needs…
Build a house with universal design for all ages
April 6, 2019 | Source: Sioux City Journal
Leaving your home, where you have lived in for many years, can be very difficult and emotionally painful. You can generally find someone to do the landscaping and cleaning. The reason most elderly people have to leave their homes is accessibility and mobility throughout the house. Typical problem areas include stairs between floors — and even just a step or two from one room to another. Another common problem is reaching cabinets above a kitchen countertop…
New voting security measures could disenfranchise voters with disabilities
April 7, 2019 | Source: The Inquirer
Imagine getting up early on election day having done your homework on the issues, educated yourself on candidates’ positions, and chosen whom to vote for, only to find poll workers who do not know how to turn on, set up, or assist you in using the voting machine. That is exactly the type of story we at Disability Rights Pennsylvania heard, along with a host of others, during the last presidential election in 2016 when we ran a hotline for disabled voters…
World-class swimmer who is legally blind uses Gwinnett Online Campus to keep up with studies
April 7, 2019 | Source: Gwinnett Daily Post
McClain Hermes is not your average Gwinnett County high school student. In addition to being a world-class swimmer, the 18-year-old senior is considered legally blind. The high school in her neighborhood — Mill Creek — isn’t equipped to respond to her unique situation, and her only alternative seemed to a 90-minute bus ride each morning to Parkview, which has a full-time vision teacher working with visually impaired students. “When I was in eighth grade looking at high schools, the county wanted to send me to Parkview High School, which is an hour-and-a-half bus ride from where I live,” said Hermes…
Trial by fire led web design CEO into lucrative niche
April 7, 2019 | Source: Newsday
It was ”trial by fire,” so to speak, that led Juan Vides, CEO of TechACS Corp., a web design and SEO firm in Garden City, into a niche that could potentially represent half his revenues by year-end. Last year a former TechACS client was being sued for $100,000 by a plaintiff alleging the client’s website wasn’t accessible for people with disabilities. He came to Vides to help him upgrade his site. “This was brand-new to me,” said Vides, 42, who had to quickly familiarize himself with web accessibility standards…
Why does death matter more than life in this city?
April 7, 2019 | Source: The Riverdale Press
Why does death warrant action over life, when life is priceless? After a tragedy, material things can be repaired or replaced, whereas a person cannot. The letter to the editor from Eric Dinowitz brings up a number of very important points as to the accessibility aspect of mass transit. “The problem is worse in the Bronx, where 83 percent of stations discriminate against the disabled.” As a person with a lifelong disability, I encounter mobility challenges every day presented by public transportation, especially when it comes to the lack of elevators…
Legal Battle Over Captioning Continues
April 8, 2019 | Source: Inside Higher Ed
Two high-profile civil rights lawsuits filed by the National Association of the Deaf against Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are set to continue after requests to dismiss the cases were recently denied for the second time. The two universities were accused by the NAD in 2015 of failing to make their massive open online courses, guest lectures and other video content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Some of the videos, many of which were hosted on the universities’ YouTube channels, did have captions — but the NAD complained that these captions were sometimes so bad that the content was still inaccessible…

IATA answers questions about accessibility as passengers urge action
April 10, 2019 | Source: Runway Girl Network
Greater attention to the difficulties that disabled passengers face when they fly raises questions about whether the airline industry is listening. Runway Girl Network reached out to the largest airline trade body, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), to ask about their policies and training on airline accessibility. IATA helps to establish standards for airline service, and offers training in best practices. It recently sent an email promoting a training book entitled ‘Make Travel Inclusive’, so RGN asked what accessibility practices the book covers and whether it will be part of a larger IATA campaign to advance accessibility initiatives…
This Is What Online Dating Is Like When You’re Blind
April 10, 2019 | Source: Huffington Post
If you’re single these days, you know that connecting with someone on a dating app is truly like finding love in a hopeless place. Now imagine how much more complicated it would be if you were blind. After all, dating apps are inherently visual platforms, so there are considerable logistical complications for low-vision users. To start with, most apps don’t offer alt text descriptions, so you’d have to rely on what you can make out of a person’s pictures before you swipe. What’s alt text? Basically, a description of images that’s read aloud to blind users on a screen reader…

April 11, 2019 | Source: FedScoop
The General Services Administration plans to begin final testing of its artificial intelligence-enabled Solicitation Review Tool in July before launching in September, said Marina Fox, DotGov domain services manager. Every federal agency has its own process for writing solicitations, and oftentimes Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act is an afterthought, Fox said at the Government Analytics Breakfast Forum on Thursday. April 7, 2019 | Source: The Daily Star- Bangladesh
Country’s overall development will not be ensured if persons with disabilities are left behind, no matter what development project the government initiates, rights activists said at a discussion yesterday. Turn-up-and-go travel is a blessing that many Londoners have access to. But not all. Most people don’t have to think too hard when planning their next journey. Just turn up and travel between any two stations on the tube, regardless of whether they have step-free access. Hop on a bus after that tube journey, before finishing with a 10-minute stroll to their final destination. For those with accessibility needs, that scenario is usually impossible. Journeys that the majority of Londoners think of as simple can turn into a struggle for people with mobility issues…
