Undocumented Parents Could Have To Choose Between A Green Card And Services For U.S.-Born Kids
May 25, 2018 | Source: KUT
Public health experts in Texas are concerned that a growing number of American children are forgoing services like Medicaid and food stamps because their parents are undocumented. The trend could get worse, they say, if a proposed change to immigration policy goes through. Vela is an East Austin nonprofit that provides free courses and support groups to parents who have children with disabilities. Maria Hernandez, the group’s founder and executive director, says she helps parents from 55 different ZIP codes in the area and the majority are immigrants…

A scholar of linguistic anthropology and the anthropology of disability, UChicago graduate student Sharon Seegers conducts research on sign language interpreters in Hanoi. Her work focuses on the ways interpreters are dependent on deaf people and what it means to value interpreters’ dependence. The Chicago Disabilities Studies Conference was conducted in an environment designed to accommodate attendees with disabilities…
Officer Shares Photo to Show Why You Can’t Park in Striped Area Next to Accessible Spots
May 25, 2018 | Source: The Mighty
Officer Zack Goins from Mississippi has written citations for people who park illegally in parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. He also does not hesitate to have cars towed when they park in the loading areas (the striped section next to accessible spots) of these parking spaces, as he is aware this prevents people from using their ramps to access their vehicles. In an interview with The Mighty, Goins said it is not uncommon for people to not understand why parking in the loading area warrants a citation…
Canyon County continues to struggle with ADA compliance
May 26, 2018 | Source: Idaho Press-Tribune
Despite recent improvements to disability access at local polling locations, Canyon County still has a long way to go before the general election in November. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice found that only four of 25 Canyon County polling locations surveyed were fully accessible to voters with physical and visual disabilities. As Canyon County continues negotiations with the DOJ on the issue, election officials have widely implemented curbside voting as a workaround during previous elections and the May 15 primary…
On a mission to make Philadelphia the most accessible US city for the arts
May 27, 2018 | Source: Christian Science Monitor
Throughout her adult life, Eleanor Childs has been immersed in arts and culture, be it through attending concerts, visiting museums, or facilitating students’ access to such experiences when she was a school administrator. But over the past decade and a half, she has been losing her sight, and she’s had to confront some difficult questions. “You have to begin to think, What can I still do? How am I going to live my life the way I lived it when I had my vision?” she says. “Am I going to lose my ability to participate in different things that are important to me?”…
New York disability advocates push to improve transport access
May 27, 2018 | Source: Aljazeera.com (Video)
Disability-rights advocates are still working to improve access to transport in New York City. The city’s transit system has one of the lowest rates of wheelchair accessibility in the United States. Advocate groups are using protests and lawsuits to win improvements to the system, such as the ongoing process to make 50 percent of city cabs accessible by 2020. The introduction of Uber and similar ride-sharing services has disturbed that balance, however, as they are not regulated and not compliant with the 50-percent requirement…
Uber and Lyft failing to support those with reduced mobility in New York
May 30, 2018 | Source: Intelligent Transport
A recent report by New York Lawyers For The Public Interest (NYLPI) has highlighted a serious fault within the operation of for-hire vehicle (FHV) companies in New York and their availability to passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs). Companies like Uber and Lyft have quickly embedded within the world’s major cities, aiming to improve the efficiency of passenger transport and reduce pollution with the removal of privately-owned cars on urban roads…

Section 508 to roll out new tools, refresh website to assist acquisition officials
May 30, 2018 | Source: FedScoop
Officials from the Section 508 Accessibility Program say that too few agencies are including the proper requirements in their new IT solicitations, so the office, which ensures that federal technology is accessible to people with disabilities, is working on new tools that will help ensure procurement requests are specific enough. John Sullivan, program director for the GSA office, said this week that his team has been scanning procurement requests appearing on FedBizOpps to see if agencies are providing enough detail about what they need in the IT products they are buying…

May 30, 2018 | Source: Community Impact Newspaper & KVUE
Battles over housing density have stolen center stage in the city’s land development code overhaul, but members of Austin’s disabled community want to ensure their accessibility concerns are not drowned out. Several disabled Austinites, organized under disability rights group Adapt of Texas, advocated Tuesday for accessibility improvements under CodeNEXT, the city’s five-year, $8.5 million project to rewrite the land development code in response to Austin’s continued exponential growth…

May 31, 2018 | Source: Geek Wire & CNBC

5 of the best airlines for accessible travel
May 31, 2018 | Source: INSIDER
Everyone has certain preferences when it comes to their favorite modes of travel. For those who fly — there’s also often a favorite (or at least preferred) airline. For some, a preferred airline has to do with the price of flights or the choice of destination, but for others, there’s a larger emphasis on the services and amenities that the airline provides. If you have a disability or you’re traveling with someone who does, the accessibility factor might weigh more heavily into your decision, or, if you fly frequently, you might try to stick to the same airline that you know has worked in the past…

The disability system is blocking people like Jaki from their benefits – literally
May 24, 2018 | Source: The Guardian- UK
If you want a symbol of Britain’s benefit system, Jaki would be it. The 36-year-old spent her 20s in Essex grafting – taking on any job to provide for her four children, even shelf-stacking for 60 hours a week. By 25, she started to get sick – the joint condition Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and the constant pain of fibromyalgia, on top of epilepsy – until she could barely walk. Watching her life change was hard. “It’s like a grieving process for the person you could have been,” she says…
Alberni university zeroes in on disability and poverty
May 24, 2018 | Source: Alberni Valley News- Canada
The road to poverty can be short and harsh for disabled workers whether they’ve acquired a disability on the job or otherwise. It’s a tragedy of epic proportions: Disabled people make up 23 percent of the total Canadian population in poverty. The telltale statistic explains why so-called “return to work” legislation — mandating assistance for those who want to get back to work early and safely — is considered a readily available means of cutting poverty…
Test case for “reasonable” accessibility provision by theme parks
May 25, 2018 | Source: Blooloop- UK
In particular it may determine what measures “reasonable” for a business to take so they comply with the Equality Act. The Equality Act 2010 states that all service providers are required to make “reasonable adjustments” to make sure that, as far as possible, disabled people can enjoy the same experiences as non-disabled people. The Guardian reports that a disabled boy, aged 11, and his mother are taking action against Flambards, based in Cornwall…
National disability insurance scheme complaints reach record level
May 28, 2018 | Source: The Guardian- Australia
Delays with the national disability insurance scheme are continuing to drive record numbers of complaints about the reform, new figures show. The latest report on the NDIS, released on Tuesday, shows 4,146 complaints were made to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) in the three months to the end of March. It is the highest number of complaints received in a single quarter, well above the 3,880 complaints received last quarter when numbers were artificially inflated by the manual entry of earlier data…
Disability guide, showing how accessible city places are for disabled people, launches
May 28, 2018 | Source: Worcester News- UK

Every place included in the accessibility checker has its own access guide, which includes details such as parking, entrances and toilets…

With Crossrail fast approaching, Londoners will soon have new ways to get around London. But what about wheelchair users, or those with visual or hearing impairments? How is London’s new railway adapted for them? Every station served by Crossrail, both in central London and further out, will have step-free access from the street to the platform, although there may be a step between the platform and the train. These stations will be staffed at all times, and a turn-up-and-go service will be available for wheelchair users who require a ramp to board the train…
Australian Finance Sector Setting Poor Example for Accessibility: Report
May 29, 2018 | Source: Which-50- Australia
Digital accessibility is gaining increasing traction as an issue in Australia. But while advocates argue inclusive design should be standard practice, new research suggests many organisations are still lagging. Even a sector like finance, often considered a leader in accessibility, is struggling. According to research, 94 per cent of the Australian financial companies reviewed are “doing poorly in their accessibility efforts”. Siteimprove crawled over 20,000 pages of the 50 largest Australian banking companies to determine their “Digital Certainty Index”…
The sign language lawyer who became a social media star
May 30, 2018 | Source: BBC News- China
When a lawyer posted a video in sign language about the danger of Ponzi schemes, his post went viral and hundreds of deaf people got in touch with their legal troubles, from fraud to domestic violence. He had uncovered a huge community in need of help. Tang Shuai was simply trying to improve legal knowledge among the deaf community when he posted the video on China’s WeChat messaging app in February. It was an instant hit. Mr Tang was flooded with so many friend requests that he had to ask WeChat to boost the friend limit from 5,000 to 10,000. So why did it strike such a chord?…
More work needed to make Manitoba accessible: disability advocate group
May 29, 2018 | Source: Globalnews- Canada
Seven steps — that’s all it takes to get into the front doors of the BMO building at Portage and Main. But for someone in a wheelchair, the short climb might as well be a mountain. On the weekend, Nate Sawatzky wanted to tour the building as part of Doors Open Winnipeg but he couldn’t get inside. “It’s literally insurmountable. It’s an obstacle that really can’t be overcome. It’s annoying because you look at it and go everyone else is going up those steps with no problem and here I am,” he said…

May 30, 2018 | Source: Press and Journal- Scotland
The plans, first approved in 1994 but never implemented, will again be discussed by councillors on the licensing committee next week following a large-scale consultation with the trade and public. Taxi drivers in the city have mostly been opposed to the plan – raising concerns about the costs involved of upgrading their vehicles or buying new ones, and about the ability of some disabled people to get into the larger cars. The consultation found that 247 responders want some form of mixed fleet, with only 49 in favour of full accessibility…
Accessibility committee throws down gauntlet at city hall
May 30, 2018 | Source: The London Free Press & Globalnews- Canada
A citizen committee dropped a bombshell on politicians Tuesday, threatening to resign en masse unless politicians committed to take their work seriously. The accessibility advisory committee followed up a presentation with its key priorities for making London more accessible with some harsh words. “Council has consistently disregarded, ignored and dismissed (the accessibility committee),” chair Jacqueline Madden said. “We really feel we’ve become just a box you guys tick off . . . you’re not actually listening to what we say.”…
National AccessAbility Week is a great time for assessing workplace policies

Every day, Canadians with disabilities face unique challenges when performing various activities, such as using public transportation, navigating communication technologies, seeking employment and doing daily tasks at work. This year, the federal government is scheduled to bring into effect its long-anticipated legislation to address these challenges and advance accessibility standards for people with disabilities across the country. However, the reality is that private organizations also have a responsibility to build accessibility into their business practices and decision-making processes…

Now, for the first time, GalaPro is teaming up with the Tony Awards to make the popular theater awards show accessible to people with hearing and vision loss. The mobile app—already placed in roughly 30 Broadway venues—uses voice recognition technology to provide on-demand closed captioning for the hearing-impaired and descriptive narration for the blind…
Introducing Design-Ability, a documentary about city accessibility designed with everyone in mind
May 30, 2018 | Source: The Globe and Mail- Canada
How can a city include everyone? Only if it’s designed by a diverse set of minds. That’s the theme of a film screening and discussion this weekend, and it’s an argument that will become louder in the next generation, as universal design comes to shape our built environments and other aspects of our lives. How so? In short, governments and the design professions are rapidly embracing broader ideas about how places, objects and digital systems should function. People with disabilities were often marginalized, legally and culturally…
The challenge of achieving tourism “for all”
May 30, 2018 | Source: Curacao Chronicle- Curaçao
According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania, the main anxiety of tourists is related to security and crimes in the destinations to which they are directed. On the other hand, a family may have another concern that is even more urgent on their list: can they correctly access their destination? This concern is accentuated in all activities that take place at the time of vacation: arriving at an airport without proper signage, taking a bus with high steps or going to a restaurant only illuminated by a dim light that makes it difficult to read the menu, to mention some examples…

Audio description allows people who are blind or vision impaired access to television and other visual media via an audio description of important visual elements delivered between lines of dialogue…

Ageing Better’s report, ‘The digital age: new approaches to supporting people in later life get online’, published today identifies an urgent need for new approaches to supporting people in later life to get online. It urges government, companies and organisations to ensure that the most vulnerable people don’t get locked out of essential services and benefits. While more older people are accessing the internet than ever before, 4.8 million people over the age of 55 are not online – mostly those with the lowest levels of wealth, health and education…
Rick Hansen Foundation has launched a bold initiative to create a gold standard for universal access
May 31, 2018 | Source: BIV- Canada & Toronto Star
Everyone seems to agree that workplaces and buildings should be accessible to people with disabilities but nobody seems to know exactly what that means. The Rick Hansen Foundation is attempting to eliminate such ambiguity with a bold initiative that establishes a gold standard for accessibility. Launched in the fall of 2017, the program trains staff to assess buildings using a checklist and a rating system that examines everything from the design of washrooms to the colour of floors. It then provides employers with a road map for change…

Consultation key to accessible communities, say disability advocates
June 1, 2018 | Source: Government News- Australia
As councils across Australia seek to make their communities more accessible for residents living with disability, advocates point to the importance of stakeholder engagement. Activities for children with autism and charging ports for electric wheelchairs are just some of the elements of disability inclusion programs being developed and implemented by local governments in Australia. In Victoria, Golden Plains Council has been running a weekly lego club to foster social and creative skills in children with autism…
