United Airlines has become the first US airline to feature braille in aircraft cabin interiors. A dozen aircraft have been fitted out with braille markings for seat rows and numbers, as well as inside and outside the toilets. It’s the beginning of a plan to roll out braille in every plane in its fleet by 2026. The move is designed to make travel more accessible for those with disabilities. According to the US Department of Transportation, in 2019, around 27 million people with disabilities travelled by air…

August 1, 2023 | Source: NBC New York and FOX 5 New York
In an effort to make as many of its stations as accessible as possible, the MTA recently unveiled a number of new locations made fully accessible last month during Disability Pride Month. Among the updated projects that were unveiled is a new elevator that opened at Court Street station (G line) in Queens on July 17. That was followed by the completion of elevator projects at Dyckman Street station (1 line) and 8th Avenue (N line) station. These new elevators include the latest technology to support safety and communications, including an emergency two-way communication system..
Disability advocates raise safety, accessibility concerns with Cap Metro board
August 2, 2023 | Source: Austin Monitor
A member of Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Access Advisory Committee is calling for monthly safety briefings from the board after the organization failed to address multiple instances of sexual harassment on the part of a MetroAccess driver. Audrea Diaz was appointed to the committee in January 2019. She requested the briefings during the board’s citizen communication session at its regular meeting on July 24. “In these safety briefings, I would like to ask what is being done on a regular basis to enforce policy and training and to ensure that MetroAccess is becoming a safe space…

July 28, 2023 | Source: Disability Scoop
Universal is changing up protocols for people with disabilities seeking accommodations during visits to its parks. Individuals who are unable to wait in line for rides and other attractions can obtain an Attraction Assistance Pass at Universal locations in Florida and California. The pass allows visitors to schedule a return time for one ride at a time so that they can check out other areas of the park while they wait. Starting this week, however, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood will require that individuals apply for a special card known as the Individual Accessibility Card prior to their visit in order to qualify for an Attraction Assistance Pass…
Elon Musk to keep Twitter light mode after backlash over X’s accessibility
July 28, 2023 | Source: Dexerto
Owner of Twitter, Elon Musk mentioned this week that he was planning to remove light mode from the app due to aesthetic purposes. This, however, brought up a lot of backlash from a key demographic on Twitter. While Musk and X/Twitter now plan to keep light mode, they will be eliminating ‘dim mode’ instead. Light mode, while not pleasing to look at during a late-night session of doom scrolling, has a reason for still being around. The various options allow for those either hard of sight, blind, or dyslexic users of Twitter to make better use of the app and website…

July 29, 2023 | Source: WQCS
Through a project called Florida AgrAbility, Serap Gorucu tries to ensure that everyone – even those with functional limitations — can operate the technology and machinery on the farm where they work. July 26 marks the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. So, it seems fitting to highlight some of the many ways UF/IFAS works with its stakeholders to help make research, teaching and Extension as accessible as possible. “Agricultural producers must be able to work their farms,” said Gorucu, a UF/IFAS assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering.”…
In Disability Pride Month, Alaska advocates celebrate progress and look to a more accessible future
July 29, 2023 | Source: Juneau Empire
July is Disability Pride Month and this year it marks the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination. The law preserves their right to access jobs, schools, public transportation and businesses. But even as people with disabilities celebrate progress, they also say there is still a lot to do. They’re advocating for policy changes to further empower them to have more control about the services they receive…

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Increasing the Digital Accessibility of Local Government Units
July 31, 2023 | Source: Preprints.org
Michael was a 46-year-old Black man, Marcie Roth recalled to Salon, and his life was destroyed following a heart attack. Roth is the executive director and chief executive officer of the World Institute on Disability, an international nonprofit center on public policy. As she recalled Michael’s story, her voice was filled with emotion. Michael’s heart attack had nothing to do with COVID-19, but because it left him disabled, he was sent to a nursing home. While there, he developed a COVID-19 infection, so the nursing home sent him to a hospital. That is where ableism reared its ugly head…
I’m Disabled And People Have No Problem Telling Me This One Shocking Thing
July 31, 2023 | Source: HuffPost
I was in my early adolescence the first time someone told me that I would “never want to be a parent.” I didn’t understand what they meant at first. And then, all at once, I knew what they were telling me about their beliefs in my body, its capacities and its cultural value. I’ve been disabled for my entire life. I manage multiple, incurable, very rare genetic conditions. For years, I was sure that I’d made the decision not to have children. I no longer know if this is true…
Enabling the disabled: Fostering commitment and transparency
July 31, 2023 | Source: Medical Marketing and Media
To hear people with disabilities, disability activists and disability advocates tell it, medical marketers have long taken their communities for granted. The industry knew it was relied upon for medications and other support and, as a result, rarely put its back into efforts to communicate with and market to such individuals. As technology facilitating inclusivity develops at warp speed, new and effective ways are arising to correct this historical oversight. But this increased attentiveness to the needs of people with disabilities comes with a caveat: There needs to be genuine commitment and transparency…
The Future of Design Is Designing for Disability
August 1, 2023 | Source: The Nation
On a trip to SFMOMA many years ago, I wandered through the museum with a friend, who is blind, and her wife. The two of us who were sighted took turns describing the art. Other patrons (and guards) glared at us as we tried to conjure up the works with our words. And then we rounded the corner into a Carl Andre exhibition, featuring Copper Zinc Plain, an expanse of copper and zinc squares laid out in a checkerboard on the floor. Unlike the rest of the gallery, visitors were explicitly invited to step onto Andre’s artwork…
Fanatics class action alleges website not accessible to blind, visually impaired customers
August 3, 2023 | Source: Top Class Actions

Castro, a blind man, argues Fanatics is denying individuals who are blind or visually impaired with equal access to the goods and services it provides to its non-disabled customers on its Dallas Cowboys website…
Climate Justice is a Disability Issue
July 31, 2023 | Source: In These Times
In September 2019, a youth-led climate strike took place in cities around the world. Millions marched on the streets, including in New York City. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg traveled emissions-free by boat to New York in late August and spoke at Battery Park, where the march culminated. Daphne Frias, 21 years old at the time, was working with Zero Hour, a youth-led climate action group, as an official spokesperson for the NYC event. She had been an activist for years, working on gun violence prevention, and had become increasingly concerned over the climate crisis…

August 1, 2023 | Source: Fronteras
Although the task force Gov. Katie Hobbs created to clarify and improve election practices has only met behind closed doors so far, it has now advanced 20 proposals. Those proposals will either roll out as new “best practices” or be presented to the Legislature. Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cázares-Kelly said the task force unanimously advanced her proposal to create a protected position under the Secretary of State’s Office to ensure compliance with legal standards for accessibility…
Casey, Scott introduce Veterans Accessibility Act
August 2, 2023 | Source: WTAJ and Senator Bob Casey and Gettysburg Times
Senator Bob Casey (PA-D) and Senator Rick Scott (FL-R) introduced a bill on Wednesday to establish an Advisory Committee to improve VA resource accessibility for veterans. The bill, called the Veterans Accessibility Act, would ensure that VA complies with federal disability laws and makes its programs accessible for veterans with disabilities, according to Casey. The act would establish a 15-person Advisory Committee on Equal Access, consisting of veterans with disabilities, disability experts and representatives of various advocacy organizations…

Amid a nationwide housing shortage, what will it take to build more accessible homes?
July 28, 2023 | Source: Radio-Canada
Toronto resident Cathy Birch doesn’t know where she would live if it wasn’t for social housing. Birch, who has had multiple amputations and uses an electric wheelchair to get around, said she’d probably be in long-term care if she hadn’t been able to land a unit through Toronto Community Housing two decades ago. That’s because navigating through the private market — where there’s already a severe shortage of affordable homes — is only made more difficult when someone is looking for one that’s accessible, too, she said…

After four years of waiting, Good Omens fans with Prime Video subscriptions can finally watch the second season of the series based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. Season 2 expanded beyond the events of the book, but with Gaiman on board as a writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, the new story and new characters felt entirely true to the first season. ‘It’s going to inspire people’: Inaugural Kello Loop run puts accessibility first
July 29, 2023 | Source: iHeartRadio- Canada
At the Kello Loop, it doesn’t matter if you walk, wheel or run. Kello Inclusive is a modelling agency that exclusively represents people with disabilities, and Saturday the organization held its first accessible running event. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., hundreds of participants made their way around the Foote Field outdoor track, some in wheelchairs, some on foot or using a mobility aid. “It’s going to inspire people, to remind them about the purpose that they have and the abilities that they have,” said Nadine Badry, a model with the agency. “What they can do versus what they can’t – and everybody can do a loop.”…

‘Pride events need to become more accessible for people with disabilities’
July 31, 2023 | Source: Gay Times- UK
I am a lover of Pride. Since COVID restrictions were lifted, I have been to 20 different Prides, across the UK and internationally. But Pride events are set up for the majority of people, the able-bodied and neurotypical. Unfortunately, like many of us, I have a hidden disability. I am autistic, which in some respects makes me incredibly lucky – although I do frequently run into issues around accessibility, I am able-bodied. Luckily, more and more Prides are recognising the need to include spaces for those who are disabled, although admittedly we still have a long way to go…

Montreal music festivals accused of reducing accessibility for people with disabilities
August 3, 2023 | Source: Global News- Canada
Most of Montreal’s major summer festivals are now in the rearview mirror, and many music lovers are no doubt looking back on them with fond memories. One couple says, however, that they were repeatedly humiliated and discriminated against at the Jazz Festival and others. They accuse organizers of brushing people with disabilities aside. “Every night, I was humiliated,” said Liette Boisvert, who uses a motorized scooter to get around in public. Boisvert and her partner Bill Marsh love to spend their summer nights at Montreal’s music festivals…
