Client: Temple College
Industry: Information Technology
Project Dates: August 2012 through October 2013
Website: http://templejc.edu/
Background
In 2012, CGI Group Inc. opened offices in Belton, Texas, that would provide 400 new jobs to the Bell County area and have a significant economic impact on the community. When fully staffed, the new facility would make CGI the largest private employer in that area.
The Issue
Though many of the new hires were recent college graduates, CGI understood the need to provide focused training to better equip new hires for their careers. CGI contacted Temple College about providing training classes for their employees via the Skills Development Fund provided by the Texas Workforce Commission. Temple College soon realized they did not have in-house instructors capable of teaching all of the courses requested by CGI, many of which were technical courses.
The Solution
Temple College contacted Microassist, Inc., an Austin-based company that has provided training solutions for government, private, and non-profit organizations for two decades.
Microassist partnered with Temple College to provided training classes for CGI employees from August 2012 through October 2013 at the Belton campus. During that time, Microassist provided courseware and instructors for classes such as Service-Oriented Architecture, Agile Essentials, Java J2EE using WebLogic, Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), and Web Design Development.
Instructors customized class content and activities based on what the students needed, providing them with instruction that directly impacted their new jobs at CGI, the projects at hand, and future goals.
The Results
Client benefited from having a workforce that became capable and confident in their technology skills through the hands-on training provided by Microassist. These training classes were also important for the city of Belton as it allowed local residents to improve their skills and join a large, well-respected organization.
